Hartford HealthCare Adds MinuteClinic as In-Network Primary Care Option Across Clinically Integrated Network

MinuteClinic and Hartford HealthCare Expand Collaboration to Offer In-Network Adult Primary Care Across Connecticut

MinuteClinic, the retail medical clinic network located within select CVS Pharmacy stores, and Hartford HealthCare, one of New England’s largest integrated healthcare systems, have announced an expanded collaboration aimed at increasing access to adult primary care services across Connecticut.

Under the enhanced relationship, adult primary care services delivered at all Connecticut MinuteClinic locations will now be considered in-network for many insurance plans accepted by Hartford HealthCare. The organizations stated that the initiative is intended to provide residents with more convenient access points for primary care while supporting coordinated, affordable, and patient-centered healthcare delivery.

The expanded collaboration comes at a time when healthcare systems across the United States continue facing growing demand for accessible primary care services amid an ongoing shortage of physicians. Industry experts have increasingly emphasized the importance of strengthening community-based care models capable of improving preventive care access, chronic disease management, and long-term patient outcomes.

Hartford HealthCare and MinuteClinic indicated that the partnership seeks to address these challenges by combining retail-based convenience with integrated health system coordination.

Connecticut patients will now be able to access adult primary care services through 20 MinuteClinic locations across the state. These clinics offer same-day and next-day appointment availability as well as evening and weekend hours, helping provide greater scheduling flexibility for patients who may otherwise struggle to secure timely primary care appointments.

The organizations noted that the care model prioritizes affordability and convenience while also supporting continuity of care through coordinated health information systems. An interoperable electronic health record infrastructure enables communication between MinuteClinic providers and Hartford HealthCare clinicians, allowing patient information to be shared more seamlessly across care settings.

According to the organizations, this integration supports more coordinated treatment planning, follow-up care, and referrals while helping reduce fragmentation within the healthcare system.

Jeffrey A. Flaks, President and Chief Executive Officer of Hartford HealthCare, described the collaboration as an important advancement in the organization’s efforts to create a more consumer-centered healthcare experience.

Flaks stated that the integration will expand healthcare access throughout Connecticut by creating more convenient entry points into the healthcare system, increasing scheduling flexibility, and simplifying connections to ongoing coordinated care.

He added that the partnership aligns with Hartford HealthCare’s broader commitment to improving healthcare accessibility, delivering better patient outcomes, and reducing overall care costs for communities throughout the state.

Primary care continues to play a critical role within healthcare systems because patients who maintain regular relationships with primary care providers often experience improved long-term health outcomes and lower healthcare expenditures over time. Preventive care, chronic disease management, early diagnosis, and coordinated specialist referrals are all closely associated with strong primary care infrastructure.

However, healthcare systems nationwide have faced mounting pressure due to shortages of primary care physicians and increasing patient demand. Long appointment wait times, geographic access limitations, and provider shortages have prompted healthcare organizations to explore alternative care delivery models.

Retail healthcare clinics have emerged as one solution capable of expanding access to routine healthcare services in community settings. Located within neighborhood pharmacy locations, these clinics often provide convenient scheduling, extended operating hours, and easier access for patients seeking preventive services or treatment for common health concerns.

Padmanabhan Premkumar, President of the Hartford HealthCare Medical Group, stated that Connecticut faces many of the same primary care workforce challenges affecting the rest of the country.

According to Premkumar, expanding primary care access through MinuteClinic creates additional options for patients seeking preventive services and ongoing healthcare support within their local communities. He added that the collaborative model aligns closely with Hartford HealthCare’s focus on accessible and patient-centered care delivery.

Patients receiving primary care services through MinuteClinic will also gain streamlined access to Hartford HealthCare’s broader healthcare network. This includes referrals and coordination involving hospitals, specialty physicians, advanced imaging services, diagnostic testing, and specialty laboratory services.

The organizations stated that maintaining continuity across care settings is a major component of the collaboration because coordinated care pathways can help improve patient experiences and reduce delays in diagnosis or treatment.

The expanded partnership also reflects broader trends toward integrated care ecosystems in which health systems collaborate with retail healthcare providers to improve accessibility and efficiency.

Retail-based healthcare has grown substantially in recent years as healthcare organizations seek new ways to meet patient demand while reducing pressure on emergency departments and hospital systems. Clinics located within pharmacies and retail settings have increasingly expanded beyond minor illness treatment into preventive care, chronic disease management, vaccinations, wellness services, and longitudinal primary care.

Jon Thiboutot, President of Retail Health at CVS Health, stated that more than 65 percent of MinuteClinic locations nationwide now offer adult primary care services through collaborations with healthcare systems and insurance providers.

Thiboutot explained that since the introduction of MinuteClinic’s primary care model nearly two years ago, the program has generated positive patient responses, including strong enrollment levels, high patient satisfaction, and measurable progress in addressing gaps in care.

He noted that MinuteClinic began offering primary care services to eligible Connecticut patients during the previous summer. The expanded collaboration with Hartford HealthCare is expected to broaden access further across the state and encourage more individuals to focus on preventive and long-term health management.

MinuteClinic operates as one of the largest employers of board-certified advanced practice providers in the United States. The clinics rely heavily on nurse practitioners and physician assistants who are trained to provide a range of healthcare services, including routine examinations, chronic condition management, preventive screenings, vaccinations, and treatment for common illnesses.

The model is designed to deliver what CVS Health describes as “whole person care,” emphasizing preventive medicine, ongoing health support, and coordinated management of patient needs over time.

Patients visiting MinuteClinic locations can receive services including annual wellness exams, monitoring and management of chronic conditions such as hypertension and diabetes, recommended health screenings, vaccinations, and walk-in treatment for minor illnesses or injuries.

The clinics also provide referral coordination when patients require specialty care or more advanced diagnostic evaluation.

The healthcare industry has increasingly emphasized the importance of preventive care and early intervention as a strategy for improving population health while controlling long-term healthcare costs. Easier access to primary care services can help identify medical issues earlier, improve chronic disease management, and reduce avoidable hospitalizations or emergency department visits.
