The opening represents another major step in Roche and Genentech’s broader investment in U.S. research, development and manufacturing. The companies are combining scientific expertise, advanced technologies and local talent to create an environment that brings together early discovery research, clinical development, artificial intelligence (AI), data science and other disciplines under one roof.

Expanding Roche’s Presence in Boston’s Life Sciences Ecosystem

Boston and the wider Massachusetts region are internationally recognized for their concentration of academic institutions, biotechnology companies, pharmaceutical organizations, research centers and highly skilled scientific talent. By establishing the new Innovation Center in Allston, Roche and Genentech are expanding their presence within this ecosystem while positioning the facility as an entrepreneurial and collaborative research hub.

The center will bring together scientists and specialists from multiple areas of drug development. These include discovery research, clinical development, AI and data science, allowing teams to collaborate throughout the medicine development process.

The end-to-end model is intended to connect activities that traditionally occur across different stages of pharmaceutical research. Scientists working on early-stage discoveries will have the opportunity to collaborate with teams involved in clinical development and advanced data analysis, creating an integrated environment extending from initial scientific concepts through later-stage clinical development.

This approach is expected to support Roche’s efforts to identify new therapeutic opportunities while accelerating the translation of scientific discoveries into potential medicines.

The facility is also expected to contribute to Boston’s broader innovation community by bringing additional scientific talent and investment to the region. The center will have capacity for up to 500 employees working across research, clinical development, data science and other functions.

95,000-Square-Foot Research Facility

Roche and Genentech have signed a 10-year lease for the 95,000-square-foot facility at Harvard’s Enterprise Research Campus. The size and planned workforce reflect the company’s intention to establish a substantial research operation rather than a limited satellite presence.

The Innovation Center will serve as a key location for Roche’s CVRM research activities in the United States. Cardiovascular, renal and metabolic diseases represent interconnected areas of medicine in which advances in one field can influence understanding and treatment strategies in another.

By creating a dedicated CVRM hub, Roche aims to bring together expertise from across these disciplines and support research programs that can address complex biological mechanisms and patient needs.

The center’s location within Harvard’s Enterprise Research Campus also provides proximity to a major academic and scientific community. Roche’s investment therefore creates opportunities for interaction with researchers, universities, entrepreneurs and other organizations operating within the Greater Boston life sciences ecosystem.

Part of a Broader U.S. Investment Strategy

The Boston Innovation Center is part of Roche and Genentech’s broader commitment to expanding their U.S. research and manufacturing footprint. The companies have also made investments and reached manufacturing milestones in Holly Springs, North Carolina, and Hillsboro, Oregon.

Together, these initiatives create a broader U.S. network spanning research, development and manufacturing.

Roche and Genentech currently employ approximately 25,000 people in the United States. Their U.S. operations include 15 research and development centers and 13 manufacturing sites across their pharmaceutical and diagnostics businesses.

The company views this network as an important foundation for maintaining its scientific capabilities in the United States. By investing simultaneously in research infrastructure, manufacturing capacity and scientific talent, Roche is seeking to connect different stages of the healthcare innovation process.

Thomas Schinecker, CEO of Roche Group, emphasized the importance of the United States to the company’s innovation strategy.

“Scientific innovation has always been the foundation of Roche and Genentech’s success, and the United States remains one of our most important innovation hubs,” Schinecker said. He added that the Boston investment forms an important component of Roche’s commitment to expanding its U.S. manufacturing and R&D footprint.

According to Schinecker, investment in scientific talent, capabilities and infrastructure will strengthen Roche’s ability to discover and develop new medicines for patients.

Supporting Collaboration Across Research Disciplines

A central feature of the new Innovation Center is its multidisciplinary structure. Modern drug discovery increasingly relies on collaboration between traditional laboratory science and computational technologies, including AI, advanced analytics and data science.

Roche said its scientific activities in Boston have already included work across several areas. These efforts include research aimed at addressing antibiotic-resistant bacteria and the application of AI to cancer research.

In oncology, AI and data-driven approaches can be used to identify potential targeted treatment strategies and to analyze how new cancer medicines perform during clinical trials. Such technologies can help researchers process large volumes of biological and clinical information and identify patterns that may support further investigation.

The Boston center is expected to provide an environment where these capabilities can be integrated with conventional discovery and clinical research.

The combination of scientific research, clinical development and computational expertise is particularly relevant as pharmaceutical companies increasingly seek to use data throughout the drug development process. Rather than treating laboratory discovery, clinical research and data analysis as separate activities, the new facility is intended to encourage interaction between these areas.

Massachusetts Officials Welcome Roche Investment

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey welcomed Roche and Genentech’s expansion in the state, highlighting the region’s concentration of researchers, workers, universities and companies.

Healey said Massachusetts’ life sciences strength is based on bringing these groups together to address major scientific and healthcare challenges. She described Roche and Genentech’s decision to expand their presence in the state as a significant investment in the region’s research and innovation capabilities.

The governor also emphasized the potential contribution of the new Innovation Center to future medical research and discovery.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu likewise welcomed Roche and Genentech’s arrival in Allston. She said the center would create hundreds of jobs, attract additional investment and strengthen Boston’s life sciences ecosystem.
