Front Range Pharmaceuticals Receives FDA Fast Track Designation for FRP-003 to Treat Long COVID
Front Range Pharmaceuticals has announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted Fast Track designation to FRP-003, its investigational drug candidate being developed for the treatment of Long COVID. The designation, issued on October 30, 2026, by the FDA’s Division of Rheumatology and Transplant Medicine, recognizes the potential importance of advancing new treatment options for patients experiencing persistent symptoms following COVID-19 infection.
The designation was granted under the company’s Investigational New Drug (IND) application, identified as IND 182511. According to the FDA’s notification letter, Front Range’s request, which was submitted on August 31, 2026, met the agency’s criteria for Fast Track designation.
This regulatory development represents another milestone in the company’s FRP-003 clinical development program. It follows the FDA’s September 30, 2026, notification that the company’s proposed Phase 2 clinical study of FRP-003 could proceed.
Front Range is now preparing to initiate the Phase 2 trial, which is expected to enroll approximately 220 adults with Long COVID and persistent, clinically meaningful fatigue. The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study will evaluate two fixed oral doses of FRP-003 against placebo over a 56-day treatment period.
The primary objective will be to assess changes in fatigue severity from baseline to Day 56 using the PROMIS® Fatigue Short Form 8a T-score. The study is designed to determine whether FRP-003 can meaningfully reduce persistent fatigue, one of the most common and disabling symptoms experienced by people living with Long COVID.
Patient enrollment is expected to begin in 2027 and is anticipated to take approximately 12 months.
The Fast Track designation provides Front Range with opportunities for more frequent communication with the FDA during the development process. Depending on the results of clinical development and the applicable regulatory criteria, the program may also become eligible for rolling review of a future marketing application, Priority Review and Accelerated Approval.
The company believes the designation will support its efforts to advance FRP-003 through clinical development while maintaining communication with regulators regarding the program’s progress.
FDA Fast Track Designation Recognizes Unmet Medical Need in Long COVID
The FDA’s Fast Track designation is intended to facilitate the development and expedite the review of investigational medicines that address serious conditions and have the potential to fulfill unmet medical needs.
For Front Range, receiving this designation represents an important regulatory achievement as it prepares to evaluate FRP-003 in a controlled clinical setting.
Long COVID, also known as post-COVID-19 condition, refers to a range of symptoms that continue or develop following an initial SARS-CoV-2 infection. These symptoms can persist for months or longer and may affect multiple organ systems.
People experiencing Long COVID can develop persistent fatigue, cognitive difficulties, sleep disturbances, respiratory symptoms, muscle and joint discomfort, and reduced physical capacity. Some individuals also experience post-exertional malaise, a worsening of symptoms following physical, mental or emotional activity.
The condition can substantially interfere with employment, education, household responsibilities, social activities and other aspects of everyday life.
Despite growing recognition of Long COVID and its effects on patients and healthcare systems, there are currently no FDA-approved treatments specifically indicated for the condition. Treatment approaches generally focus on managing individual symptoms, addressing associated medical conditions and supporting patients’ functional recovery.
The lack of approved therapies highlights the need for well-designed clinical studies investigating potential treatment options.
Through the Fast Track designation, Front Range will have the opportunity to communicate more frequently with the FDA regarding its clinical development strategy and regulatory requirements.
Fast Track status can provide several potential advantages:
- More frequent FDA communication: The designation allows more regular interaction between the company and the agency to discuss development plans, clinical study designs and other regulatory considerations.
- Rolling review eligibility: If applicable requirements are satisfied, the company may be able to submit completed sections of a future marketing application for review as they become available rather than waiting for the entire application to be completed.
- Priority Review eligibility: Depending on the data and applicable criteria, FRP-003 could potentially qualify for Priority Review if a future marketing application is submitted.
- Accelerated Approval eligibility: If the relevant regulatory requirements are met, the program may also be considered for Accelerated Approval based on appropriate clinical evidence and endpoints.
These potential benefits are intended to support efficient drug development and regulatory evaluation. However, Fast Track designation does not guarantee FDA approval, establish the effectiveness of FRP-003 or eliminate the need to demonstrate safety and efficacy through appropriate clinical studies.
For Front Range, the immediate priority remains initiating the Phase 2 clinical trial and generating reliable evidence about the investigational treatment’s potential benefits in people with Long COVID.
Management Highlights Importance of Advancing FRP-003
Suzanne Vernon, PhD, Chief Clinical Officer of Front Range Pharmaceuticals, emphasized that Long COVID continues to affect millions of people worldwide and can have a substantial impact on their health, daily functioning and overall quality of life.
She noted that persistent symptoms, particularly fatigue, can be debilitating for patients, while the absence of FDA-approved treatments highlights the importance of developing new therapeutic approaches.
According to Vernon, the Fast Track designation recognizes the significant unmet medical need associated with Long COVID and provides an opportunity for the company to work more closely with the FDA as FRP-003 advances through clinical development.
She also emphasized that the company’s immediate objective is to initiate a rigorous Phase 2 clinical study to determine whether FRP-003 can meaningfully reduce fatigue severity and improve daily functioning.
The upcoming trial will be an important step in establishing the investigational candidate’s clinical profile.
Rather than relying solely on preliminary observations, the randomized and placebo-controlled design will allow researchers to compare outcomes between participants receiving FRP-003 and those receiving placebo.
This approach is intended to generate more reliable evidence regarding the treatment’s potential effects and safety in the targeted patient population.
Isaac Foster, Chief Executive Officer of Front Range Pharmaceuticals, also welcomed the FDA decision, describing the designation as an important achievement for the company’s development program.
Foster attributed the regulatory progress to the work of Vernon and the company’s clinical and regulatory teams, which developed the clinical strategy and supported the preparation of the IND application.
He also acknowledged the contributions of external partners involved in the program.
Steve Pondell of IBT Solutions supported the company’s chemistry, manufacturing and controls (CMC) activities, while Michelle Wawrzyniak and the team at Tranquil Clinical and Research Consulting Services led the preparation of the IND application.
Foster also expressed appreciation to the company’s investors, including C&A Companies and the Blain family, for their continued support.
He stated that Front Range looks forward to working closely with the FDA as the FRP-003 program progresses through clinical development.
Long COVID Continues to Create Significant Global Healthcare Challenges
Long COVID remains an important public health challenge because of the wide range of symptoms that can develop after an initial infection and the potential for prolonged impairment.
David Putrino, PhD, Nash Family Director of the Cohen Center for Recovery From Complex Chronic Illnesses at Mount Sinai and Professor of Rehabilitation and Human Performance at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, highlighted the global scale of the condition and the need for additional therapeutic research.
Putrino estimated that more than 400 million people worldwide have experienced Long COVID and noted that the number continues to grow with repeated infections.
He emphasized that patients can experience severe and debilitating symptoms that interfere with their ability to participate in everyday activities.
According to Putrino, the continued absence of FDA-approved treatments makes the development and evaluation of new therapeutic approaches particularly important.
He also highlighted the role of regulatory initiatives such as the FDA’s Fast Track program in supporting the development of potential treatments for serious conditions with unmet medical needs.
Putrino stressed that patients need treatment options and that rigorous clinical trials are essential for determining whether new therapies can provide meaningful benefits.
His comments underscore the importance of clinical research in Long COVID, particularly as researchers continue investigating the biological mechanisms associated with persistent post-infection symptoms.
The company clarified that Putrino is not affiliated with Front Range Pharmaceuticals.
Phase 2 Clinical Trial Designed to Evaluate FRP-003 in Approximately 220 Adults
Front Range is preparing to initiate a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase 2 clinical trial of FRP-003 in adults with Long COVID.
The FDA cleared the company’s IND application to proceed with the study, as announced on October 6, 2026.
The planned clinical trial will enroll approximately 220 adults between 18 and 65 years of age who have Long COVID accompanied by persistent and clinically meaningful fatigue.
Participants will need to meet the study’s requirements, including having fatigue as their predominant symptom, accompanied by post-exertional malaise and reduced daily functioning.
These eligibility characteristics are intended to identify a patient population experiencing a substantial fatigue burden associated with Long COVID.
The study will use a randomized 1:1:1 allocation approach, with participants assigned to one of three treatment groups.
The groups will include:
- A first fixed dose of FRP-003.
- A second fixed dose of FRP-003.
- A matching placebo.
FRP-003 and placebo will be administered orally twice daily for 56 days.
The evaluation of two fixed doses will allow researchers to assess the treatment’s potential effects at different dosage levels while comparing the results with placebo.
The double-blind design means that participants and relevant study personnel will not know which treatment is being administered during the blinded portion of the trial. This approach is intended to reduce potential bias when assessing clinical outcomes.
To maintain the integrity of the study, placebo participants will receive volumes corresponding to the respective treatment doses. However, participants assigned to placebo will be analyzed together as a single placebo group.
This design will support comparisons between the two FRP-003 dose groups and the placebo group.
Fatigue Severity Selected as the Primary Endpoint
The primary endpoint of the Phase 2 study will be the change from baseline to Day 56 in fatigue severity, measured using the PROMIS® Fatigue Short Form 8a T-score.
Fatigue is one of the major symptoms reported by individuals with Long COVID and can significantly affect physical activity, concentration, productivity and overall daily functioning.
Unlike ordinary tiredness, persistent fatigue associated with Long COVID may remain even after adequate rest and can interfere with a person’s ability to complete routine activities.
The PROMIS Fatigue Short Form 8a is a standardized patient-reported assessment designed to measure the impact and severity of fatigue.
Using this instrument, investigators will evaluate changes in participants’ reported fatigue levels over the 56-day treatment period.
The comparison between baseline and Day 56 will help determine whether treatment with FRP-003 is associated with improvements in fatigue severity.
The inclusion of a placebo group is particularly important because symptoms of Long COVID can fluctuate over time. A controlled comparison can help researchers distinguish potential treatment effects from natural changes, patient expectations and other influences.
In addition to the primary efficacy assessment, the study will include safety monitoring throughout the clinical evaluation.
An independent Data Monitoring Committee will periodically review unblinded safety information to assess the safety of the investigational treatment and provide oversight during the study.
This independent monitoring mechanism is intended to support participant safety while the clinical program progresses.
Front Range also stated that the Phase 2 study will be registered on ClinicalTrials.gov before patient enrollment begins, providing public information about the trial.
Company Prepares for 2027 Enrollment
Following the FDA’s IND clearance and the subsequent Fast Track designation, Front Range is preparing the operational activities required to initiate the Phase 2 clinical trial.
Patient enrollment is expected to begin in 2027 and is anticipated to take approximately 12 months.
The multicenter study will require coordination across participating clinical research sites, including patient identification, eligibility assessments, informed consent, treatment administration, safety monitoring and clinical data collection.
The company will also need to ensure that study procedures are implemented consistently to support reliable evaluation of the primary endpoint.
The planned enrollment of approximately 220 adults is intended to provide a structured clinical dataset for assessing the safety and potential efficacy of FRP-003 in the targeted population.
The 56-day treatment period will allow investigators to evaluate changes in fatigue severity over a defined timeframe.
The independent Data Monitoring Committee will also periodically assess unblinded safety information as participants receive treatment.
As preparations continue, the company expects to provide further updates regarding the study’s progress and clinical development activities.
Expanded Access Policy to Be Made Publicly Available
In addition to preparing for the Phase 2 trial, Front Range stated that it will make its expanded access policy for FRP-003 publicly available on its corporate website.
The policy will be provided in accordance with Section 561A(f) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.
Expanded access, sometimes referred to as compassionate use, is a regulatory pathway that may allow certain patients with serious or immediately life-threatening conditions to access investigational medical products outside clinical trials when specific requirements are satisfied.
Making an expanded access policy publicly available provides information about the company’s approach to requests for access to its investigational treatment.
However, publishing an expanded access policy does not mean that FRP-003 will automatically be available to patients outside clinical trials. Access to investigational products remains subject to applicable regulatory requirements, clinical considerations and the company’s ability to provide the treatment.
The company’s immediate development focus remains the planned Phase 2 clinical study.
The FDA’s Fast Track designation represents an important regulatory milestone for Front Range Pharmaceuticals as it advances FRP-003 for the treatment of Long COVID.
The designation follows the FDA’s September 30, 2026, notification that the Phase 2 study could proceed and the company’s October 6 announcement of IND clearance.
With the additional regulatory support, Front Range is moving toward initiating a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving approximately 220 adults with persistent Long COVID-related fatigue.
The trial will evaluate two oral doses of FRP-003 against placebo over 56 days, with changes in fatigue severity at Day 56 serving as the primary endpoint.
Going forward, important milestones will include the initiation of patient enrollment, progress in clinical recruitment, safety assessments and the availability of Phase 2 results.
Although Fast Track designation provides opportunities for closer regulatory communication and potential expedited review pathways, the clinical effectiveness and safety of FRP-003 remain to be established through clinical research.
Through its planned Phase 2 program, Front Range aims to determine whether FRP-003 can provide meaningful improvements in fatigue and daily functioning for people living with Long COVID.
The development program reflects the company’s efforts to address a significant unmet medical need through a structured clinical evaluation and continued collaboration with the FDA.
About Fast Track Designation
FDA’s Fast Track program is designed to facilitate the development and expedite the review of drugs intended to treat serious conditions and fill an unmet medical need. A Fast Track product may be eligible for:
- More frequent meetings and written communication with FDA about the drug’s development plan, trial design and use of biomarkers
- Rolling review, which allows a company to submit completed sections of a New Drug Application (NDA) for review rather than waiting until every section is complete
- Accelerated Approval and Priority Review, if relevant criteria are met
Fast Track designation does not mean FDA has approved FRP-003 or determined that it is safe or effective. FDA’s letter notes that if the clinical development program does not continue to demonstrate that the product meets the Fast Track criteria, the application will not be reviewed under the program.
