The Hague, April 10, 2024—In a significant milestone for their enduring partnership, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Netherlands convened to discuss shared priorities and the alignment of strategic goals. This meeting underscored the Netherlands’ steadfast dedication to global health, human rights, and universal access to healthcare.
Amid ongoing conflicts, disasters, and the escalating impact of climate change, this year’s Strategic Dialogue served as a crucial forum to reflect on the long-term vision of this partnership. Marjolijn Sonnema, Director General for Public Health at the Netherlands’ Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, highlighted the commitment to cooperation and partnership demonstrated by both parties throughout the dialogue sessions.
A pivotal outcome of the dialogue was the recognition of alignment between the Dutch Global Health Strategy and the WHO’s upcoming 14th General Programme of Work. This alignment sets the stage for synergies in critical areas such as health system strengthening, pandemic preparedness, climate change and health, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and mental health support.
Dr. Bruce Aylward, WHO Assistant Director-General for Universal Health Coverage, emphasized the Netherlands’ role as a global health leader and trusted partner of the WHO. He underscored shared priorities in sexual and reproductive rights, gender equity, health systems, security, climate resilience, and mental health, expressing anticipation for deepening the partnership to enhance global and domestic health and well-being.
Acknowledging the Netherlands’ leadership as a flexible donor, WHO highlighted the imperative of ensuring sustainable financing for global health initiatives. This sentiment was echoed in the inaugural WHO Investment Round, aimed at mobilizing predictable, sustainable, and flexible resources to address global health challenges, especially for vulnerable populations.
In addressing contemporary challenges such as geopolitical tensions, both parties emphasized the need for sustained collaboration to comprehensively tackle pressing health issues. This commitment underscores the shared determination to advance global health objectives amidst evolving global dynamics.
