Marshall B. Ketchum University (MBKU) recently celebrated the outstanding achievements of its alumni at the 2024 Distinguished Alumni Awards Ceremony, held during its second annual homecoming event. This year, the university honored sixteen exceptional alumni for their significant contributions to the fields of optometry, physician assistant studies, and pharmacy. The ceremony brought together nearly 300 attendees, emphasizing the strong bonds between the university and its alumni and showcasing their vital roles in advancing their professions and serving their communities. The event also included an exhibit commemorating the 120th anniversary of the Southern California College of Optometry (SCCO) and the 10th anniversary of the School of Physician Assistant Studies, highlighting the college’s rich history and legacy.
The Distinguished Alumni Awards were presented to four individuals who exemplify excellence in their respective fields and a deep commitment to community service. This award honors MBKU alumni whose personal and professional accomplishments enhance the reputation of their school and program. The honorees included:
- Jacqueline Bowen, OD, ’92: A leader in optometry, Dr. Bowen has operated a private practice for over 30 years. She previously served as president of the Colorado Optometric Association and is currently the president-elect of the American Optometric Association. She has received numerous accolades for her dedication to optometry and her community.
- Donald Spaulding, OD, ’79: An influential figure in optometry, Dr. Spaulding began as an assistant professor at SCCO before becoming a partner in a premier private practice. He is dedicated to community service through his work with the Ontario Rotary Club and various volunteer initiatives in Rancho Cucamonga, California.
- Michael Sullivan-Mee, OD, ’90: A trailblazer in optometric education, Dr. Sullivan-Mee has held numerous leadership positions, including chief of optometry at the Chinle Indian Health Service and clinical professor at SUNY. He is renowned for his contributions to glaucoma research and education.
- Judy Tong, OD, FAAO, ’91: Dr. Tong has made a significant impact on optometric residency education at SCCO and nationally. As an associate professor and assistant dean of residencies at MBKU, she has mentored countless students and established new residency programs, advancing the profession through her leadership and dedication.
The ceremony also recognized twelve Professional Achievement Alumni Award Honorees for their remarkable contributions across various fields of optometry, community service, and healthcare leadership. Notable winners included:
- Carmen Barnhardt, OD, MSEd, ’95: Vice president for enrollment and student services at MBKU, known for her work in student support systems and leadership development.
- Catherine Heyman, OD, FAAO, ’93: Founding dean of High Point University’s new School of Optometry, recognized for her contributions to pediatric low vision and optometric education.
- Stephanie Woo, OD, FAAO, ’11: Owner of multiple vision care clinics and a leader in the Scleral Lens Society, specializing in contact lenses.
- Chen Young, OD, ’95: A prominent figure in Nevada healthcare, founder of multiple clinics, and advocate for optometry education and policy.
- Dat Bui, OD, ’15: On-site eye doctor at Apple, co-founder of ODs on Finance, and author focused on financial independence for optometrists.
- Raveena Garcha, PharmD, ’20: A critical care pharmacist known for her excellence in pharmacy practice and commitment to patient care.
- Aaron Hunro, DMSc, MMS, PA-C, ’20: A dedicated PA-C involved in education and community service, recognized for his innovative contributions to PA training.
- Alyssa Pack, OD, ’20: Owner of EyeCare at the Cove Optometry and advocate for pediatric vision health, active in community service.
- Andrew Perry, PA-C, ’20: Lead PA at Brea Urgent Care, known for his exceptional patient care and mentoring of future healthcare practitioners.
- Cathy Van Pham, PharmD, ’22: Recently promoted to vice president of operations for the California Pharmacists Association, blending pharmacy and business expertise to drive healthcare innovation.
- April Shaw, PA-C, ‘20: Committed to serving underserved populations through her work with a locum tenens company.
- Emily Stephey, OD, FAA, ’17: Current faculty member at SCCO, recognized for her leadership in imaging analysis education and community service.
