At Lenovo Tech World, Lenovo™, in collaboration with Innovations in Dementia, launched “Alzheimer’s Intelligence,” a photorealistic 3D avatar powered by AI, designed to support individuals and families affected by dementia and Alzheimer’s. This innovative project offers a 24-hour conversational avatar that delivers curated advice with a focus on accuracy, privacy, and compassion.
With over 55 million people globally living with dementia, this initiative addresses a growing need for accessible support. Dr. David Llewellyn, Professor of Clinical Epidemiology and Digital Health, highlighted the potential of AI to enhance human interaction and assist those affected by the disease.
The avatar, “Liv,” was created using a composite of images from 10 individuals living with dementia. AI-generated facial expressions and a large language model (LLM) based on real experiences help Liv provide personalized, empathetic responses. The project includes contributions from Innovations in Dementia’s Dementia Diaries and panel interviews with people affected by the disease.
Alzheimer’s Intelligence is designed for people recently diagnosed with dementia, allowing them to ask questions about day-to-day challenges, family discussions, and even new hobbies. The avatar provides a non-medical, compassionate resource, offering insight that only someone living with dementia could provide.
Lenovo’s commitment to responsible AI development is evident in this first-of-its-kind project, which leverages the company’s full range of AI-ready devices and services. Doug Fisher, Lenovo’s Chief Security and AI Officer, emphasized the importance of using AI to benefit underserved communities.
Currently in trial, the avatar is expected to be made more widely available in the future. It represents a major step in using technology to support those living with dementia, creating a space for their voices to guide others facing similar challenges.
This project demonstrates Lenovo’s dedication to “Smarter AI for All” by using technology to create meaningful, empathetic connections.
