California University of Science and Medicine Celebrates 2025 MD Match Day
California University of Science and Medicine (CUSM) proudly announced that its 2025 MD graduating class successfully secured residency placements as part of the national Match Day event. This milestone marks the culmination of years of rigorous medical education and training, as students transition into the next phase of their careers in healthcare.
Match Day: A Defining Moment
Match Day is a pivotal event in the lives of medical students across the United States. Held annually through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), graduating MDs discover where they will complete their residency training. At precisely 9 a.m. Pacific Time on Friday, March 21, 2025, students at CUSM and institutions nationwide simultaneously learned where they would spend the next three to seven years of their medical careers.
Dr. Paul Lyons, CUSM Dean and President, reflected on the significance of the day:
“Match Day is probably the most emotional day in the medical school journey. After years of commitment and challenges, the door to the next chapter is opened. I am thrilled that so many of our talented students will remain in our region, and many will serve as residents in our partner hospitals.”
Residency Placements and Regional Impact
CUSM continues its commitment to addressing the physician shortage in California, particularly in the Inland Empire. Among the 2025 MD graduates:
- 66% will perform their residencies in Southern California.
- 28% will remain in the Inland Empire.
- 97% of students successfully matched into a residency program.
Twenty-six of the graduates will complete their residencies at CUSM-affiliated teaching hospitals, including:
- Riverside Community Hospital
- Riverside University Health System
- Eisenhower Medical Center
- Arrowhead Regional Medical Center (CUSM’s primary teaching partner)
These institutions play a crucial role in the clinical training of CUSM students, providing hands-on experience through rotations and clerkships. Many physicians from these hospitals also serve as faculty members, offering mentorship and guidance to medical students.

Celebrating Student Success
In keeping with medical school tradition, CUSM hosted a celebratory event on campus for graduating students and their families. The day was filled with anticipation, joy, and reflection as students embraced the next phase of their careers.
Dr. Lyons emphasized the significance of this achievement:
“Our mission to educate compassionate healthcare providers comes to fruition on each and every Match Day. It is a privilege to contribute to the journey of these dedicated students and to share their joy on this momentous day.”
Competitive Specialties and National Placements
CUSM graduates secured residencies across a diverse range of medical specialties, including some of the most competitive fields in medicine:
- Primary Care Specialties: Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Psychiatry, and Neurology
- Highly Competitive Specialties: Anesthesiology, Neurosurgery, ENT, Radiology, Vascular Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Ophthalmology, and Dermatology
While many students remained in California, others matched into residency programs at prestigious medical institutions nationwide, reinforcing CUSM’s growing reputation as a leading institution for medical education.
