Columbus Unites to Support Life-Saving Research and Patient Care at the 2025 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure
Susan G. Komen®, the world’s leading breast cancer organization, has announced the return of its signature Race for the Cure event this spring. The 2025 Komen Columbus Race for the Cure will take place on Saturday, May 17, 2025, bringing together survivors, families, and advocates in a united effort to fund research, provide patient support, and drive lasting change for those affected by breast cancer.
Breast cancer remains a pressing health concern in the U.S., claiming the life of a woman every 12 minutes. Recent data highlights an alarming increase in diagnoses among younger women, making Komen’s mission more critical than ever. In Ohio alone, over 11,800 women are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2025, and more than 1,400 will lose their lives to the disease. Despite progress—including a 44% reduction in the breast cancer death rate since 1989—far too many lives are still being lost. Experts estimate that one-third of breast cancer deaths could be prevented if every patient had access to timely, high-quality care.
A Race That Makes a Difference
Funds raised at the Columbus Race for the Cure allow Susan G. Komen to address the immediate needs of breast cancer patients through its free Patient Care Center. This center offers vital services such as patient navigation, financial assistance, and emotional support. Additionally, the funds contribute to groundbreaking research and advocacy efforts aimed at securing patient-centered protections and increasing survival rates.
During fiscal year 2024, Komen’s Financial Assistance Program provided over $500,000 in direct financial support to more than 870 individuals in Ohio undergoing breast cancer treatment, including those living with metastatic breast cancer. Additionally, Komen’s Patient Care Center delivered over 1,500 services to more than 1,200 people across Ohio, helping to eliminate barriers to essential medical care.
A Call to Action
“We are excited to bring the community together for the Columbus Race for the Cure this year—a powerful opportunity to make a real difference in the fight against breast cancer,” said Sean Shacklett, Executive Director, Ohio & Michigan Susan G. Komen. “Providing critical support to those facing breast cancer is at the heart of our mission and ensures everyone has the same chance of survival, but we can’t do it alone.
This year’s Race is more than just an event; it’s a movement to drive meaningful change, ensure equitable access to care, and fuel lifesaving research. We invite everyone to stand with us, take action, and help create a future where no one has to face this disease alone.”
