Veterinary technicians play a vital role in the veterinary field, carrying out important tasks such as assisting in surgeries, conducting diagnostic tests, and providing emergency care. To meet the increasing demand for animal care and adapt to the changing needs of the veterinary community, the Zoetis Foundation is dedicated to expanding educational opportunities for aspiring veterinary technicians.
Through grant support to the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF), the Zoetis Foundation/AVMF Veterinary Technician Student Scholarship aims to empower the next generation of veterinary technicians. Now in its third year, this initiative offers scholarships of $2,000 to over 150 veterinary technician students, helping to alleviate student debt and promote diversity within the profession. In celebration of National Veterinary Technician Week, the Zoetis Foundation interviewed past scholarship recipients, who shared their educational experiences and career aspirations.
Crystal Stinson, a veterinary technician at a clinic in Kentucky specializing in small dogs, expressed her passion: “I became a veterinary technician because I love animals, and caring for them truly heals my soul. My education has equipped me with skills I apply in my work and at the low-cost veterinary facility where I volunteer, enabling me to make a difference for those who can’t afford care.” Crystal plans to take the Veterinary Technician National Exam this fall.
Emily Vega, a Registered Veterinary Technician at Antioch Dog & Cat Hospital in Missouri, emphasized the importance of her education: “The most significant insight I gained was understanding the foundational ‘why’ behind our role as veterinary technicians. While my experience as an assistant provided essential technical skills, formal education deepened my grasp of the scientific principles guiding treatment, diagnostics, and medication administration. My goal is to create a welcoming atmosphere for non-English speaking pet owners, encouraging them to seek the care their pets need and deserve.”
Katie Chapman, a veterinary technician at Noah’s Ark Animal Clinic in Ohio, highlighted her commitment to animal comfort: “Every animal that comes into the clinic deserves the best treatment. I strive to make each visit a comfortable and safe experience, whether it’s by introducing calming scents, adding a blanket to the exam table, offering treats to anxious pets, or providing soothing words and gentle touch.” She also noted, “One lesson from school that has stuck with me is to always be open to learning. This field is continually evolving.
