Tandem Diabetes Care, Inc., a global medical technology company focused on developing and commercializing innovative diabetes management solutions, has announced the appointment of Jeannette Bankes as its new president and chief executive officer (CEO), effective November 16, 2026. Bankes will also join the company’s Board of Directors as part of the leadership transition. She will succeed John Sheridan, who plans to retire at the end of 2026 following more than a decade of contributions to the organization.
The appointment represents an important leadership development for Tandem as it continues to strengthen its position in the global diabetes technology market. Under its next phase of leadership, the company intends to build on its established technology portfolio, advance its innovation pipeline, expand access to its diabetes management solutions and pursue sustainable, profitable growth.
Sheridan will continue working with Tandem as an employee through the end of 2026 to support the transition. Following his retirement from the CEO position, he will serve as a consultant to the company, helping ensure continuity and a smooth transfer of leadership responsibilities.
The leadership change follows a Board-led succession planning and executive search process. The process was designed to identify a leader with the operational experience, strategic capabilities and customer-focused approach required to guide Tandem through its next stage of development.
Bankes brings more than 30 years of global operating experience and a strong track record of translating business strategies into operational execution, organizational development and sustained growth. Her experience in managing complex business operations, supporting innovation and delivering customer-focused solutions is expected to contribute to Tandem’s long-term priorities.
Her appointment comes at a significant time for the company as diabetes technology continues to evolve, with growing demand for automated insulin delivery systems, connected diabetes management platforms and solutions that can improve treatment experiences for people living with diabetes.
John Sheridan’s Leadership and Contributions to Tandem Diabetes Care
John Sheridan has played a significant role in Tandem’s development and expansion over the past decade. He joined the company in 2013 as chief operating officer and subsequently became president and CEO in 2019. During his leadership, Tandem underwent substantial business and technological development, strengthening its position as a recognized participant in the global diabetes technology industry.
One of the major achievements during Sheridan’s tenure was the expansion and commercialization of Tandem’s automated insulin delivery technology portfolio. These solutions have contributed to the company’s mission of simplifying diabetes management through innovative products designed to support people who require insulin therapy.
Automated insulin delivery technology represents an important advancement in diabetes care. These systems are designed to help manage insulin delivery by using connected devices and glucose information to support more responsive diabetes management. By developing and expanding its portfolio of solutions, Tandem has worked to provide people with diabetes and healthcare professionals with additional technology options.
In addition to product innovation, Sheridan focused on strengthening the company’s operational capabilities and expanding its international presence. His leadership helped Tandem develop the organizational infrastructure required to operate across multiple markets while supporting the growing adoption of its diabetes management technologies.
The company also initiated changes to its business model during his tenure, with an emphasis on simplifying access to its technology and improving the overall customer experience. These efforts reflect the importance of making diabetes management solutions more accessible to people who may benefit from advanced insulin delivery systems.
According to Tandem, approximately half a million people worldwide benefit from its technology. This growing global user base highlights the company’s role in the diabetes management sector and the importance of continuing to develop products that address the needs of individuals living with diabetes.
Sheridan’s departure marks the conclusion of a leadership period characterized by portfolio expansion, operational development and international growth. However, his continued involvement as an employee through the end of 2026 and subsequent consulting role is expected to provide additional support during the transition.
Board of Directors Highlights Bankes’ Leadership Experience
Beckie Robertson, Chair of Tandem’s Board of Directors, expressed appreciation for Sheridan’s contributions and welcomed Bankes to the company’s leadership team.
Robertson noted that Sheridan’s dedication to Tandem’s customers, employees and shareholders had been instrumental in establishing the company as a global leader in diabetes technology. His leadership helped position the organization for its next stage of growth while supporting the development of innovative products and expanding its international operations.
The Board believes Bankes has the leadership capabilities and operational experience needed to build on the foundation established under Sheridan.
Robertson highlighted Bankes’ broad operating background, commitment to understanding customer needs and ability to translate innovation into meaningful outcomes. These capabilities are expected to be particularly important as Tandem continues advancing its technology development priorities and works toward delivering sustainable business growth.
The Board’s confidence in Bankes reflects the company’s intention to maintain strategic continuity while identifying new opportunities to strengthen its competitive position.
As Tandem continues operating in an increasingly technology-driven diabetes care market, effective leadership will be important in balancing product innovation, commercial execution, customer engagement and financial performance.
Sheridan Expresses Confidence in the Company’s Next Chapter
Commenting on his retirement and the appointment of his successor, Sheridan described his experience leading Tandem as a privilege. He also recognized the contributions of the company’s employees and their shared commitment to improving the lives of people living with diabetes.
Sheridan emphasized that Tandem’s progress has been driven by a dedicated workforce focused on advancing the company’s mission and developing technologies that address important challenges in diabetes management.
He also highlighted the significance of the company’s global reach, noting that approximately 500,000 people worldwide benefit from Tandem’s technology.
According to Sheridan, Bankes is an exceptional leader with the experience and capabilities needed to guide the organization through its next chapter. He expressed confidence in her ability to work alongside Tandem’s employees and leadership team to continue advancing the company’s objectives.
His comments also reflect the importance of maintaining the organization’s established mission and customer-focused culture throughout the transition.
Although Sheridan will step down from his CEO position, his continued participation as a consultant is expected to help the company preserve institutional knowledge and maintain operational continuity as Bankes assumes her new responsibilities.
Jeannette Bankes Outlines Priorities for Tandem’s Future
Bankes expressed enthusiasm about joining Tandem and leading the company during its next stage of development. She highlighted the organization’s mission, differentiated technology portfolio and established international presence as important strengths that create opportunities to improve the lives of more people with diabetes.
She emphasized her intention to work closely with Tandem’s employees to build on the company’s existing capabilities, strengthen its innovation pipeline and expand access to its technology.
Her leadership approach will focus on disciplined execution and maintaining a strong understanding of customer needs. These priorities align with Tandem’s broader objectives of delivering innovative diabetes management solutions while creating long-term value for patients, healthcare stakeholders and shareholders.
Bankes also acknowledged the importance of the company’s talented workforce in supporting its future ambitions. Collaboration across the organization will be essential as Tandem continues developing its technology portfolio and responding to changing expectations within the diabetes care market.
The company’s future growth strategy is expected to involve several interconnected priorities, including:
- Advancing technology innovation: Continuing to develop and enhance its diabetes technology portfolio, particularly automated insulin delivery solutions.
- Expanding customer access: Identifying opportunities to make Tandem’s technologies more accessible to people living with diabetes across global markets.
- Strengthening operational execution: Improving organizational efficiency and maintaining disciplined business operations.
- Supporting sustainable growth: Balancing investments in innovation and market expansion with the objective of achieving sustainable, profitable growth.
- Maintaining customer focus: Developing solutions that address the practical needs and experiences of people managing diabetes.
These priorities will be important as the company works to extend its impact within the global diabetes community.
Tandem’s Focus on Automated Insulin Delivery and Diabetes Technology
Tandem operates in the medical technology industry, with a particular focus on developing solutions that support insulin-dependent diabetes management.
Diabetes is a chronic condition that requires ongoing monitoring and treatment. For individuals who depend on insulin, managing glucose levels and coordinating insulin delivery can involve considerable daily effort. Advances in diabetes technology have created opportunities to simplify certain aspects of treatment through connected devices, automated systems and digital health solutions.
Automated insulin delivery systems are an important component of this evolving landscape. By integrating insulin delivery technology with glucose monitoring information, these systems are designed to help support insulin management and reduce some of the manual responsibilities associated with traditional treatment approaches.
Tandem’s technology portfolio has helped establish its presence in this market. The company’s continued focus on innovation reflects the growing importance of connected diabetes management solutions and the need for technologies that can support different patient requirements.
Expanding access to these products will remain an important consideration as the company develops its commercial strategy. Improving access involves not only introducing new technologies but also addressing the business and operational processes that influence how customers obtain and use diabetes management solutions.
The business model changes initiated during Sheridan’s tenure demonstrate Tandem’s efforts to simplify technology access and improve the customer experience. Bankes is expected to build on these initiatives while evaluating opportunities to strengthen the company’s market position.
With approximately half a million people worldwide already benefiting from its technology, Tandem has an established foundation from which to pursue further expansion.
Inducement Award Approved for Incoming CEO
Separately, Tandem announced that its Board of Directors has approved an inducement equity award for Bankes in connection with her appointment as president and CEO.
The award was approved following a recommendation from the Board’s Compensation Committee, which consulted with its independent compensation consultant.
The inducement award will consist of restricted stock units (RSUs) covering a number of shares of Tandem common stock with an aggregate value as close as practicable to, but not exceeding, $10 million.
The number of shares included in the award will be determined using the average closing price of Tandem common stock, as reported on the Nasdaq Global Market, over the 15-trading-day period ending on the fifth trading day before the grant date.
The grant is scheduled to become effective on December 15, 2026.
Under the vesting arrangement, one-third of the shares subject to the RSUs will vest on the first anniversary of the grant date. The remaining two-thirds will vest in eight equal quarterly installments thereafter.
This structure establishes a multi-year vesting schedule intended to support Bankes’ continued leadership and alignment with the company’s long-term performance objectives.
The RSUs will be subject to the terms and conditions of Tandem’s 2023 Long-Term Incentive Plan, as amended. However, the award will be granted outside the plan as an inducement material to Bankes entering employment with the company, in accordance with Nasdaq Listing Rule 5635(c)(4).
The company indicated that the award is intended, in part, to compensate Bankes for the value of unvested equity-based awards that she forfeited when leaving her previous employer.
Additional information regarding the inducement award is expected to be included in Tandem’s proxy statement for its 2027 Annual Meeting of Stockholders.
Leadership Transition Supports Tandem’s Long-Term Growth Strategy
The appointment of Bankes represents an important development in Tandem’s leadership as the company continues pursuing its strategic objectives in the global diabetes technology market.
Sheridan’s contributions since joining the organization in 2013 helped establish a foundation for continued product development, operational expansion and international growth. His leadership as president and CEO from 2019 has also supported the commercialization of automated insulin delivery solutions and initiatives to improve access to the company’s technologies.
Bankes will assume leadership responsibilities effective November 16, 2026, with Sheridan continuing to support the organization through the end of the year before transitioning into a consulting role.
Her extensive global operating experience, customer-focused leadership approach and commitment to innovation are expected to support Tandem’s efforts to advance its technology roadmap and strengthen its commercial capabilities.
As the company moves forward, its priorities will include expanding its product portfolio, reaching more people living with diabetes, improving operational performance and pursuing sustainable, profitable growth.
With an established global customer base and a continued commitment to diabetes technology innovation, Tandem aims to build on its existing achievements and extend the impact of its solutions across the diabetes community.
The leadership transition is therefore positioned as both a continuation of the company’s established strategy and an opportunity to strengthen its capabilities for the next phase of growth.
