Tasso, Inc. Survey: One in Three Patients Delay Blood Tests Due to Anxiety and Pain

Survey Reveals 78% of Patients Experience Anxiety During Blood Draws; 74% Want Painless Home Collection Solutions

Tasso, Inc., a leading provider of patient-centric blood collection solutions, surveyed over 600 adults in the U.S. to explore their experiences and preferences regarding blood testing. The findings from the survey, titled Patient Preferences, Perceptions, and the Evolving Challenges of Ensuring Patient Compliance With Diagnostic Healthcare Testing, confirm that the current blood collection methods often fail to meet patients’ needs for convenience and comfort.

Key survey findings include:

  • Patient Anxiety and Pain: A staggering 78% of respondents reported anxiety associated with blood draws, while 37% expressed a fear of needles. This discomfort leads many patients to delay or avoid necessary diagnostic tests.
  • Testing Accessibility: Approximately one in three patients avoid blood tests due to inconvenient locations and discomfort during collection. Notably, 69% are unwilling to travel more than 10 miles for testing, and the primary reason for postponing tests is difficulty in scheduling clinic visits.
  • Home Testing Familiarity: Although 73% of participants had purchased home health testing kits during the COVID-19 pandemic, only 15% have actually completed a home blood test, indicating a lack of awareness regarding available options.
  • Desire for Improved Solutions: Patients are eager for better blood testing experiences. About 76% of those who reported pain during venipuncture would be willing to pay out of pocket to alleviate this discomfort, and 74% expressed interest in painless home blood collection technology. The primary motivations for this interest were painlessness and convenience.

“This survey validated our belief that the painful and inconvenient blood collection process often leads to patient non-compliance and missed care,” said Ben Casavant, PhD, CEO and Co-Founder of Tasso. “Disrupting this model is crucial for early detection of critical health changes. While familiarity with home testing has increased post-COVID, access to home blood test kits remains limited. Providing a painless, at-home option could greatly enhance compliance, especially for those with limited access to healthcare facilities.”

Methodology

Conducted by PureSpectrum, this survey gathered insights from 606 consumers between June 5 and June 24, 2024, utilizing an independent market research platform.
