Wolters Kluwer Health is celebrating the first anniversary of AI Labs for UpToDate® with the introduction of advanced AI capabilities aimed at enhancing clinical decision-making. This experimental initiative places health system customers at the forefront of innovation, enabling them to test and provide feedback on new AI-driven clinical decision support technologies. UpToDate Enterprise Edition users will now benefit from AI-powered search functionalities that deliver quicker answers to clinical inquiries. Additionally, AI Labs is currently evaluating generative AI (GenAI) features, such as improved drug queries and intelligent guided prompts backed by expert content from UpToDate.
“Our investment in AI Labs has yielded new functionalities that provide what providers need most—rapid, reliable answers to clinical questions derived from trusted, evidence-based content,” said Greg Samios, President and CEO of Clinical Effectiveness at Wolters Kluwer Health. “We remain committed to developing innovative AI solutions that address the complex challenges of today’s healthcare landscape.”
Framework for AI-Powered Healthcare
The Wolters Kluwer framework for AI-powered healthcare is based on four key pillars: fast answers, clinical guidance, workflow integration, and analytics to demonstrate return on investment (ROI). This framework supports continuous innovation in AI Labs through collaboration with health system customers, technology partners, and industry leaders.
Moving forward, AI Labs for UpToDate will collaborate with UpToDate Enterprise Edition users to improve the retrieval of accurate medication-related insights, as drug-related queries constitute a significant portion of clinical questions. The focus will be on providing concise answers, including dosage information.
Additionally, UpToDate AI Labs will test guided questions, which will offer clinically relevant prompts based on the context of a user’s initial query. This feature aims to facilitate a more intuitive interaction with UpToDate, mimicking the experience of consulting with a clinical expert.
Ensuring Responsible AI Deployment in Healthcare
“AI in healthcare will achieve full deployment when it demonstrably benefits hospitals, clinicians, and patients,” noted Dr. Dick Taylor, Chief Clinical Informatics Officer for Washington University in St. Louis and BJC Healthcare. “The full adoption of AI in patient care has been hindered by legitimate concerns regarding the reliability of the clinical guidance generated and the underlying data sets these models depend on.
