Johnson & Johnson Receives CE Mark for ACUVUE OASYS MAX 2-Week Reusable Contact Lens
Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) announced that it has received CE Marking for ACUVUE OASYS MAX 2-Week, a new reusable contact lens designed to provide enhanced comfort and visual clarity throughout the full two-week wearing cycle. The lens incorporates Johnson & Johnson’s proprietary MAX technologies and is intended to address the evolving needs of contact lens wearers who increasingly spend significant amounts of time using digital devices and navigating visually demanding environments.
The new lens represents the latest addition to the company’s ACUVUE OASYS MAX portfolio and expands Johnson & Johnson’s advanced contact lens technology into the reusable two-week category. Following the CE Marking, ACUVUE OASYS MAX 2-Week is expected to begin a phased rollout in select European countries later in 2026, with broader market expansion planned during 2027 and 2028, subject to local regulatory approvals and market readiness.
The company said the product has been developed with a focus on two of the most important priorities for contact lens users: comfort and visual clarity. According to Johnson & Johnson, approximately 140 million people worldwide wear contact lenses, and about half of these users select reusable lenses. As reusable lenses remain an important part of the global vision-correction market, the company is positioning ACUVUE OASYS MAX 2-Week as an advanced option for patients seeking a combination of comfort, vision performance and convenience.
Addressing the Needs of Reusable Contact Lens Wearers
Contact lens wearers increasingly rely on their lenses throughout long and varied days. Work, entertainment, commuting, outdoor activities and digital device use can all place different demands on the eyes. Johnson & Johnson noted that comfort continues to be a leading priority for contact lens users, while the growing use of smartphones, computers and other digital screens can contribute to symptoms associated with visual fatigue and dryness.
ACUVUE OASYS MAX 2-Week has been designed around these changing lifestyle requirements. The product combines Johnson & Johnson’s Eye-Inspired Designs with its MAX technologies to support comfort and visual clarity across the two-week wear cycle.
Jacqueline Henderson, Company Group Chair, Vision, MedTech, Johnson & Johnson, said people who select reusable contact lenses should not have to sacrifice comfort or clarity as their daily activities become increasingly demanding. She described ACUVUE OASYS MAX 2-Week as an effort to bring the company’s advanced ACUVUE technologies to reusable lens users and support comfortable, clear vision during the complete two-week cycle.
The company’s approach is intended to provide a lens that can be used across a range of everyday visual situations rather than being focused on a single environment. This includes time spent looking at digital screens, outdoor activities and driving, including situations involving night-time vision.
OptiBlue Light Filter Technology
One of the principal technologies incorporated into ACUVUE OASYS MAX 2-Week is the OptiBlue Light Filter. According to Johnson & Johnson, the technology filters at least 60% of blue-violet light, which the company states is the highest level among reusable contact lenses.
Blue-violet light exposure is one consideration associated with modern visual environments, particularly as people spend more time using digital devices. The company has incorporated the filtering technology as part of the lens design to help address the visual demands experienced by contemporary contact lens users.
Johnson & Johnson also emphasizes that filtering high-energy visible, or HEV, light should not be interpreted as providing a demonstrated systemic or ocular health benefit. The company advises eye care professionals and patients to discuss individual vision and eye-care needs when considering contact lens products.
TearStable Technology Designed for Comfort
ACUVUE OASYS MAX 2-Week also features TearStable Technology, which is designed to help maintain moisture and support comfort throughout the day.
Maintaining adequate moisture on the surface of the eye is an important consideration for contact lens wearers, particularly during extended periods of use. Digital device activity can also reduce blinking frequency in some situations, potentially contributing to sensations of dryness or discomfort.
TearStable Technology is intended to help address these challenges by helping lock in moisture. Combined with the lens’s other design features, Johnson & Johnson says the technology is intended to support comfortable wear throughout the two-week cycle.
The company is positioning this combination of comfort-focused technology and visual performance as a key differentiator for reusable contact lens users who want a lens designed for their increasingly digital and active lifestyles.
UV Protection Included
Another feature of ACUVUE OASYS MAX 2-Week is Class 1 UV blocking incorporated into each lens. Johnson & Johnson says the lenses help shield the eyes from harmful ultraviolet radiation, adding another layer of protection for wearers who spend time outdoors.
However, the company stresses that UV-blocking contact lenses should not be considered a substitute for protective eyewear such as UV-absorbing sunglasses or goggles. Contact lenses do not completely cover the eye or surrounding areas, meaning they cannot provide the same type of overall protection offered by appropriate UV-protective eyewear.
Johnson & Johnson also notes that long-term UV exposure is one of the factors associated with cataracts, although the risk is influenced by environmental and personal factors. While UV-blocking contact lenses can contribute to protection against harmful UV radiation, clinical studies have not demonstrated that wearing such lenses reduces the risk of cataracts or other eye disorders.
Designed for a Familiar Fitting Experience
In addition to patient-focused features, Johnson & Johnson has designed ACUVUE OASYS MAX 2-Week to support eye care professionals by providing a familiar fitting experience for patients already using ACUVUE OASYS 2-Week lenses.
According to the company, existing ACUVUE OASYS 2-Week wearers can be fitted using the same fitting process without additional chair time. Clinical testing found that 99% of subjects wearing ACUVUE OASYS 2-Week were successfully refit into ACUVUE OASYS MAX 2-Week using the same power, base curve and diameter.
This compatibility may help simplify the transition for eye care professionals and patients who are already familiar with the ACUVUE OASYS two-week platform. By maintaining the same key fitting parameters, the company aims to make adoption of the newer technology more straightforward within routine eye care settings.
Expansion of the ACUVUE OASYS MAX Portfolio
ACUVUE OASYS MAX 2-Week expands the company’s existing ACUVUE OASYS MAX portfolio by bringing the platform’s MAX technologies to consumers who prefer reusable two-week lenses.
Reusable contact lenses remain an important segment of the vision correction market. While some consumers prefer daily disposable lenses, others select reusable products based on their individual preferences, routines and recommendations from eye care professionals. Johnson & Johnson’s latest launch is intended to provide those users with an additional advanced option.
The planned rollout will initially focus on selected European markets. The company expects commercial availability to expand progressively during 2027 and 2028, depending on regulatory approvals and individual market readiness.
The CE Marking provides an important regulatory milestone for the European commercialization strategy. It allows the company to move forward with its planned market introduction in applicable European countries while continuing preparations for broader geographic expansion.
U.S. Availability Not Yet Planned
Johnson & Johnson clarified that ACUVUE OASYS MAX 2-Week has received CE Marking for European markets but has not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Consequently, the lens is not currently available for sale in the United States.
The company’s phased international strategy reflects the different regulatory requirements that apply across individual markets. Future availability will therefore depend on obtaining the necessary regulatory clearances or approvals in each jurisdiction.
Continued Focus on Vision Innovation
The launch highlights Johnson & Johnson’s continued investment in contact lens technologies designed around changing consumer needs. As digital device use becomes increasingly integrated into everyday life, contact lens manufacturers are developing products intended to address comfort, moisture management, visual clarity and other aspects of modern vision correction.
With ACUVUE OASYS MAX 2-Week, Johnson & Johnson is combining its Eye-Inspired Designs with OptiBlue Light Filter and TearStable Technology, while also incorporating Class 1 UV blocking. The company believes the combination can provide reusable contact lens wearers with a more advanced option for everyday vision correction.
The CE Marking marks the beginning of the next stage for the product, with the first European launches expected later in 2026 and wider expansion planned over the following years. As commercialization progresses, eye care professionals will play an important role in determining whether the lens is appropriate for individual patients based on their vision requirements, eye health and wearing habits.
Johnson & Johnson also emphasizes that, like all contact lenses, ACUVUE products carry potential risks. Contact lens wearers can experience eye problems, including corneal ulcers, as well as irritation, itching or discomfort. Contact lenses should not be worn in the presence of eye infections or certain eye conditions, or when a systemic disease may affect the eye. Patients are advised to consult their eye care professional and review the applicable Instructions for Use for detailed information on contraindications, precautions and potential adverse reactions.
With its latest CE Marking, Johnson & Johnson is preparing to bring ACUVUE OASYS MAX 2-Week to selected European markets and subsequently expand its availability. The product underscores the company’s strategy of extending advanced contact lens technologies across different wearing schedules while responding to the growing demand for comfortable, clear vision in increasingly digital lifestyles.
