Amprion and MLM Medical Labs Expand Access to α-Synuclein Testing for Neurodegenerative Disease Trials Across Europe
Amprion, a global leader in advancing the diagnosis and characterization of neurodegenerative disorders through seed amplification testing, has announced a strategic licensing collaboration with MLM Medical Labs, a global central and specialty laboratory with operations in Germany. The agreement is designed to expand access to advanced pathology-based biomarker testing for biopharmaceutical companies conducting clinical trials in Europe and support the development of new therapies for neurodegenerative diseases.
Under the collaboration, Amprion will license its proprietary seed amplification assay (SAA) methodology to MLM Medical Labs. The technology is the foundation of Amprion’s SAAmplify®-αSYN testing platform, which detects misfolded alpha-synuclein (α-synuclein) aggregates in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).
Through the licensing arrangement, MLM Medical Labs plans to validate and perform α-synuclein seed amplification testing as an in-house in vitro diagnostic (IVD) at its laboratory in Germany. The service will be available to biopharmaceutical sponsors conducting clinical research across Europe, potentially making it easier for sponsors to incorporate pathology-based biomarker testing into multicenter studies.
The collaboration represents another step in Amprion’s efforts to broaden international access to molecular and pathology-based testing technologies for neurodegenerative diseases. It also reflects the growing importance of biomarkers in clinical research as pharmaceutical companies seek more precise methods for identifying patients, understanding disease biology, and evaluating therapeutic responses.
Advancing Pathology-Based Biomarker Testing
Neurodegenerative diseases represent a major challenge for modern medicine. Conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, Lewy body dementia, multiple system atrophy (MSA), and Alzheimer’s disease with Lewy body co-pathology involve complex biological processes that can begin long before symptoms become obvious.
Traditional clinical diagnosis often relies on symptoms, medical history, neurological examinations, and other assessments. However, these approaches may not always provide a direct measurement of the underlying pathological processes responsible for disease.
Biomarker technologies are increasingly being investigated as a way to provide more direct biological information. In particular, seed amplification assays have emerged as a technology capable of detecting extremely small amounts of misfolded proteins associated with certain neurodegenerative disorders.
Amprion’s SAAmplify-αSYN test is designed to detect misfolded α-synuclein aggregates in CSF. The presence of abnormal α-synuclein is associated with a group of disorders known as synucleinopathies.
By detecting pathological α-synuclein aggregates, seed amplification testing may provide researchers with information about disease biology that cannot always be obtained from clinical symptoms alone.
The availability of such testing can be especially valuable in clinical trials, where accurate patient characterization is essential. Pharmaceutical developers need to ensure that study participants have the relevant biological characteristics for the therapy being investigated. Biomarker testing can therefore contribute to more targeted patient selection and potentially improve the quality of clinical trial data.
Expanding α-Synuclein Testing in Europe
The new licensing agreement will allow MLM Medical Labs to establish α-synuclein seed amplification testing within its German laboratory.
As a global central and specialty laboratory, MLM Medical Labs can support biopharmaceutical companies involved in clinical research and provide laboratory services associated with multicenter trials. By incorporating Amprion’s SAA technology into its capabilities, the company will be positioned to provide European trial sponsors with access to pathology-based α-synuclein testing closer to their clinical research operations.
Russ Lebovitz, M.D., Ph.D., CEO and co-founder of Amprion, emphasized the international nature of neurodegenerative disease research and the importance of making sophisticated biomarker technologies available to researchers in different regions.
According to Lebovitz, European researchers and biopharmaceutical sponsors are already showing strong demand for seed amplification testing. The collaboration with MLM Medical Labs is intended to help sponsors identify appropriate patients for clinical trials and generate richer biological datasets that can improve understanding of neurodegenerative disease.
The partnership could be particularly valuable for multicenter studies in which consistent laboratory testing across participating locations is important for maintaining data quality.
Understanding the Role of α-Synuclein
Alpha-synuclein is a protein naturally found in the nervous system. Under pathological conditions, the protein can misfold and aggregate, contributing to the biological processes associated with several neurodegenerative disorders.
Abnormal α-synuclein accumulation is a defining feature of synucleinopathies, including Parkinson’s disease, Lewy body dementia, and multiple system atrophy. α-Synuclein pathology can also be present as a co-pathology in certain patients with Alzheimer’s disease.
The ability to detect these pathological aggregates can therefore provide valuable information about disease classification and biology.
Seed amplification assays work by detecting the ability of small amounts of misfolded protein to initiate or seed the formation of additional aggregates under controlled laboratory conditions. This amplification process allows researchers to identify extremely low levels of abnormal protein that might otherwise be difficult to detect using conventional analytical approaches.
For clinical research, such sensitivity may offer an opportunity to investigate disease biology at the molecular level and potentially improve the characterization of patients participating in therapeutic studies.
Supporting Clinical Trial Patient Selection
One of the key potential benefits of pathology-based biomarker testing is its role in patient identification.
Clinical symptoms associated with neurodegenerative disorders can overlap across diseases, particularly during earlier stages. Patients who appear clinically similar may have different underlying biological processes. This can complicate clinical trial enrollment and make it more difficult to evaluate whether an investigational therapy is being tested in the appropriate patient population.
Biomarker testing can provide additional biological information that complements clinical assessments.
For sponsors developing therapies targeting α-synuclein-related disease mechanisms, the ability to identify patients with evidence of pathological α-synuclein could be particularly relevant. Incorporating SAA testing into clinical trial protocols may allow researchers to better characterize study populations and evaluate outcomes in relation to underlying disease pathology.
The Amprion-MLM collaboration is intended to make this type of testing more accessible to European clinical trial sponsors.
Building a Scalable Manufacturing Infrastructure
In parallel with its international expansion, Amprion has established SAA Protein Manufacturing, LLC (SAAPM), a newly formed subsidiary focused on producing standardized protein substrates used in seed amplification assays.
The development of reliable and consistent substrate manufacturing is an important component of scaling SAA technology. Protein substrates are fundamental to the performance of seed amplification assays, and consistency in substrate quality can influence assay reproducibility, reliability, and scalability.
By establishing SAAPM, Amprion aims to secure a standardized and scalable supply of substrates to support its expanding testing portfolio.
The manufacturing initiative is intended to address not only Amprion’s own growing requirements but also broader demand across the research and pharmaceutical development community. Standardized substrates could potentially help improve consistency among laboratories conducting seed amplification research and testing.
This capability becomes increasingly important as SAA technologies move from specialized research applications toward broader use in clinical trials and clinical testing.
Supporting Global Harmonization of Clinical Research
MLM Medical Labs also sees the partnership as an opportunity to support the development of more harmonized clinical trial approaches.
Scott Houlton, CEO of MLM Medical Labs, said expanding access to innovative biomarker technologies is important for advancing neurodegenerative disease research. He noted that the collaboration will enable the laboratory to offer Amprion’s differentiated assay to sponsors conducting clinical trials in Europe while supporting globally harmonized study designs.
Harmonization is particularly important for multinational clinical trials. When studies are conducted across multiple countries and clinical centers, variations in laboratory procedures and testing methodologies can introduce challenges when comparing results.
Establishing standardized testing processes within a central laboratory environment can help sponsors maintain consistency and streamline the collection and interpretation of biomarker data.
The collaboration between Amprion and MLM Medical Labs is therefore expected to contribute not only to increased access to α-synuclein testing but also to the broader infrastructure required for international biomarker-driven clinical research.
Strengthening Amprion’s International Expansion
The agreement with MLM Medical Labs adds to Amprion’s growing network of relationships with biopharmaceutical companies and research organizations around the world.
As pharmaceutical developers increasingly investigate disease-modifying therapies for neurodegenerative disorders, the need for reliable biomarkers is expected to grow. Biomarkers can play multiple roles throughout drug development, including patient selection, disease characterization, pharmacodynamic assessment, and potentially treatment-response monitoring.
Amprion’s focus on seed amplification technology positions the company within this expanding area of neurodegenerative disease research.
The company’s strategy combines development of biomarker testing technologies with investment in manufacturing infrastructure. The creation of SAAPM is expected to help support the company’s ability to scale SAA testing as demand increases in both the United States and international markets.
The partnership with MLM Medical Labs complements this strategy by extending access to Amprion’s α-synuclein testing technology into the European clinical trial environment.
Potential Impact on Neurodegenerative Drug Development
The growing availability of pathology-based biomarkers could have important implications for the development of new treatments for neurodegenerative diseases.
Many neurodegenerative disorders have historically been diagnosed primarily through clinical assessment, which can make early and accurate identification challenging. Molecular biomarkers may provide a more direct view of disease pathology and could help researchers better understand patient populations.
For therapeutic developers, this information can be valuable when designing clinical trials. Selecting patients based on biological characteristics may help ensure that investigational therapies are evaluated in populations most likely to have the relevant disease mechanism.
In addition, biomarker data may help researchers interpret clinical outcomes and understand why certain patients respond differently to treatment.
While biomarker testing is not a substitute for comprehensive clinical evaluation, combining molecular information with established clinical assessments may provide a more complete picture of disease.
The strategic licensing collaboration between Amprion and MLM Medical Labs marks an important development in the expansion of seed amplification testing for neurodegenerative disease research in Europe.
By licensing its proprietary SAA methodology and enabling validation and testing at MLM Medical Labs’ German facility, Amprion is helping extend access to α-synuclein pathology testing for biopharmaceutical sponsors conducting European clinical trials.
At the same time, the establishment of SAA Protein Manufacturing demonstrates Amprion’s focus on building the infrastructure needed to support growing demand for seed amplification technologies. Standardized substrate production could play an important role in ensuring assay consistency and supporting future expansion across research, clinical testing, and drug development.
Together, these initiatives reinforce Amprion’s broader strategy of advancing biomarker-driven approaches to neurodegenerative disease research. The company aims to help researchers better identify disease pathology, select appropriate clinical trial participants, and generate deeper biological insights that can inform the development of new therapies.
As the pharmaceutical industry continues to pursue treatments for Parkinson’s disease, Lewy body dementia, multiple system atrophy, and other neurodegenerative conditions, access to reliable molecular biomarkers will remain an important component of clinical research. The Amprion and MLM Medical Labs collaboration could help meet that need by bringing α-synuclein seed amplification testing closer to European clinical trial networks and supporting more consistent, pathology-informed approaches to drug development.
